Seward Incorporated is organizing a conference on March 17, 2010 in Muscat, Oman around the theme: The Integration of Learner-Centered Approaches into Pre-Service Teacher Training (http://client.sewardinc.com/cccm/conference/index.html). The conference is the culminating activity of a year-long project funded by the US Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). Conference sponsors include Creative Associates International, Inc., Oman Ministry of Education, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), and Seward Incorporated. The conference will feature speakers from Sultan Qaboos University, the Oman Ministry of Education, and Seward Incorporated.

As a result of educational reforms underway in Oman, Sultan Qaboos University's College of Education and the Oman Ministry of Education recognized the need to train in-service and pre-service teachers on learner-centered instruction. With support from the Middle East Partnership Initiative, they launched a pilot program to test the integration of learner-centered instructions in a pre-service methods course. This conference's presentations will describe this activity, as well as build on the experience with presentations that provide insights into questions such as:

  • What is child-/learner-centered instruction?
  • Why is it important for pre-service teachers to learn about and in learner-centered environments?
  • How are child-centered methods of instruction being used in Oman's schools?
  • What course materials and resources were developed for and used in the pre-service training project?
  • What was learned from the pilot pre-service teacher training project and related experiences at SQU?

This is a one-day event being held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Muscat, Oman. The audience for the event is teacher educators from Oman and the region. The conference is free to attend, but online pre-registration is required.
